(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Microsoft (www.microsoft.com) announced on Thursday it has officially launched WebMatrix, a free Web development tool designed to help Web developers create, customize and publish websites to the Internet.

In a special launch event that took place Thursday in Sandusky, Ohio, Microsoft executives and guest speakers from a range of open source Web applications offered a detailed look at the new website tool. The video broadcast of the event can be viewed here.

Released in beta form last July, WebMatrix complements the other elements of the Microsoft Web Platform including the Web Application Gallery and the Web Platform Installer.

Microsoft has released a set of video tutorials, how-to tips and other resources for helping new Web developers get started.

“Our Web platform offers a complete ecosystem of products, partners and technologies all aimed at helping developers succeed on the Web,” says S. Somasegar, senior vice president of the developer division at Microsoft. “Every day, more people are looking to build, publish and manage a website, and now, with WebMatrix, we provide developers of all skill levels with a sophisticated, yet easy-to-use solution to get their sites online.”

WebMatrix is available in nine languages and includes a set of tools to create new websites, using code provided through different templates or using existing free open source Web applications.

WebMatrix is backed by nearly 40 open source application partners, including WordPress, Joomla!, DotNetNuke and Umbraco.

The tool is designed to be accessible for anyone wanting to create a website, including students and new developers, Web agencies, and professional Web developers, who can also contribute to a directory of code published through open source package management system, NuGet.

WebMatrix provides the tools needed to run a website, including the Web server, database and Web frameworks.

WebMatrix increases development productivity with support for multiple programming syntaxes, as well as includes a search engine optimization reporting tool to help build search-friendly websites.

When a website is ready to be published, Web developers seamlessly publish it to their own hosting provider or one available through WebMatrix. The hosting partners’ offerings range in scalability and price based on users’ needs.

The more than 30 hosting partners span 18 countries and include companies such as STRATO in Germany, DataJapan in Japan, Applied Innovations in the US, Fasthosts and Poundhosts in the UK, Infobox in Russia, MyHosting.com in Canada, NetMagic Solutions in India, and Netissime and Ikoula in France.
