February 21, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Software giant Microsoft (microsoft.com) announced on Thursday it will host a webinar to discuss how Windows Server 2008 software can be used to build dedicated servers and appliances. Scheduled for February 28, the webinar will demonstrate “Server Core,” a new feature that minimizes the footprint of the operating system.
The live event will run from 8:00 to 9:00 a.m. PST, and will instruct viewers on “key differentiators from earlier Windows Server operating systems, and the resultant benefits to the embedded space,” says Microsoft. The new server software helps provide a smaller footprint, virtualization, as well as new management and security functionality, says the company.
The company recently released to manufacturing Windows Server 2008, which is set for worldwide launch on February 27. The new solution provides a new Server Core installation option that omits the Windows shell, providing a command prompt instead. It includes only file server, DHCP server, DNS server, media services and Active Directory support.
Microsoft also announced the release of its “Windows Essential Server Solutions,” a suite of products built on Windows Server 2008. The package includes Windows Small Business Server 2008 and Windows Essential Business Server 2008.
