(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — According to a report posted by The Register yesterday, and originating from the Microsoft (www.microsoft.com) Mix 2011 conference currently taking place in Las Vegas, the software giant has launched an update to its Windows Azure software developers kit, providing improved functions for migration and management of applications and servers based on IIS to the company’s PaaS cloud environment.

According to The Register, the event also saw Microsoft announce a community technology preview of some new Azure code: the Azure Traffic Manager – which balances the performance of an application running on Azure from different geographies; and a preview of a new service for streaming video hosted on Azure to adjust for different bandwidth conditions.

Microsoft demonstrated the new software this week, at more or less the same time that virtualization software rival VMware launched its CloudFoundry PaaS environment, in an effort to provide service providers (and others) with an open-source environment for operating platform as a service clouds that will serve as alternatives to the big PaaS clouds, like Azure.

Microsoft has made efforts already to offer service provider partners a means of delivering the Azure platform from their own data centers, with the Windows Azure Appliance.

According to The Register, the company also extended the deadline for developers to sign up for the company’s free trial of Windows Azure. The deadline for signing up for the offering – which provides 750 hours of extra-small instances and 25 hours of small instances, 20GB of storage, 50K storage transactions, and 20GB each of data transfers in and out – has been extended until September 30.

Microsoft had previously extended the deal deadline to June 31, in February.

Mix 2011 continues until Thursday, April 14.
