February 25, 2005 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — On Friday, Microsoft (microsoft.com)released details of the expanded product line for SQL Server 2005, thenext version of the company’s flagship database solution. The new linewill include SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition, SQL Server 2005Standard Edition, SQL Server 2005 Workgroup Edition and SQL Server 2005Express Edition, each designed for a different sized organization.
According to Microsoft, the SQL Server2005 product family has been redesigned to feature higher availabilityand scalability and a more secure and reliable data managementplatform. Microsoft says SQL Server’s integration with the WindowsServer system will help enterprises increase development time andreduce total cost of ownership.
“The industry has changed since weintroduced SQL Server 2000. With the new SQL Server 2005 product line,we’ve increased the breadth of our data management solutions to offermore choices to customers,” says Paul Flessner, senior vice presidentof server applications at Microsoft. “We have increased thefunctionality in SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition and SQL Server 2005Enterprise Edition and extended the platform with SQL Server 2005Workgroup Edition and SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. We’re now betterequipped to offer solutions that meet the technological and budgetaryrequirements of our customers.”
Microsoft says Dell will be the firstvendor to offer the Workgroup and Standard editions for both SQL Server2000 and SQL Server 2005 prepackaged with Dell PowerEdge servers.
