August 25, 2005 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Software giant Microsoft's (microsoft.com) next release of its virtual server product will support virtualization of Linux and Sun Solaris operating systems on servers running Windows, reports say. The product is set for release in the fourth quarter.

 

The product's name will be changed from Virtual Server 2005 Service Pack 1 to Virtual Server 2005 R2. Zane Adam, director of marketing for the Windows Server division at Microsoft, said in reports that the change reflects the number of new enhancements, which is higher than a typical service pack.

 

In addition to support for Linux and Solaris, Virtual Server 2005 R2 will feature 64-bit support, Adam says. The product will also deliver better performance for virtual machines in memory-intensive applications and higher availability through new clustering technologies.

 

Microsoft Virtual Server 2005 was released last October.
