October 14, 2003 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — MCI (mci.com) said today it had appointed Nancy Higgins as executive vice president of ethics and business conduct and chief ethics officer. Higgins will report to CEO Michael Capellas.

Higgins most recently served as vice president of ethics and business conduct for Lockheed Martin. MCI said she will oversee its global ethics program and will be based in the company’s corporate headquarters in Ashburn, Va., starting today.

“Nancy brings a rare combination of direct experience in developing and overseeing large-scale ethics programs, a proven 10-year track record for creating best practices and, most importantly, an absolute passion for the job,” said Capellas. “We are thrilled to welcome Nancy as the latest addition to MCI’s new executive leadership team.”

MCI also said it had taken “significant steps” to develop an internal culture centered on ethics and integrity, including introducing ethics training, an “ethics hotline” and an “ethics pledge” signed by the company’s top 100 executives.

MCI won approval for its proposed settlement with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in August stemming from fraud charges. The company expects to emerge from bankruptcy in the fall. The company, formerly known as WorldCom, changed its name in April.
