June 28, 2005 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting and Internet service provider MCI (mci.com) said on Tuesday that it had successfully completed the SAS 70 Type I examination of its Premium Data Centers and their operating environments. MCI operates its Premium Data Centers in 13 US cities, including New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Boston, Miami and Dallas.
The examination was conducted by Ernst and Young and looked at the design of MCI’s controls and their implementation. Areas examined included physical access to facilities; logical access to systems including multi-layered security, network services operations and performance; and environmental controls.
Statement on Auditing Standards No. 70 was established by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants to assess service organizations, examining companies’ internal controls related to financial transaction processing and assessing their operational measures and defined control objectives.
“MCI is dedicated to delivering standard-setting hosting and data storage services to our enterprise customers,” says Joe Crawford, vice president of hosting services at MCI. “The successful completion of our SAS 70 Type I examination further underscores MCI’s commitment to achieving excellence through controlled processes and high quality metrics for security and reliability.”
MCI is currently pursuing a SAS 70 Type II examination for its Premium Data Centers, to be completed by the end of the year. The company says completion of SAS 70 II will help its customers with Sarbanes-Oxley compliance.
MCI completed its most recent SAS 70 Type II examination in December 2004 for its managed hosting Smart Centers in Beltsville, Maryland, San Jose, California and London, England.
