McAfee, VMware Advance Security

February 28, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Security solution provider McAfee (mcafee.com) announced on Wednesday that it has entered into a relationship with virtualization software provider VMware (vmware.com) in an effort to advance virtualization security.

As part of the relationship McAfee plans to embed the newly announced VMware VMsafe security technology into future security solution offerings. McAfee has also signed an OEM agreement with VMware to utilize its VMware ESX Server 3i technology, which could include purpose-built versions of VMware ESX Server 3i to support McAfee security technology, says the company.

“When it comes to security, there’s no better way to run applications than in virtual machines,” says Brian Byun, VP of global partners and solutions at VMware. “As one of the world’s top security companies, McAfee recognizes the momentum of virtualization as a transformative technology, and is ahead of the curve to ensure the strongest possible security for proliferating virtualized environments.”

The company also unveiled its new email and Web security virtual appliance solution for early delivery customers, built from the ground up for the VMware platform. The virtual appliance has the same features and effectiveness of the physical McAfee security appliances and helps organizations defend their networks, while at the same time reducing overall cost of security for customers and enabling them to implement security faster, says the company.

McAfee recently released a research report that spotlights a cyber practice known as typo-squatting.
