August 26, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Hungarian telecommunication group Magyar Telekom (magyartelekom.hu) has completed a 18 million euro expansion to its recently-bought subsidiary Dataplex’s (dataplex.hu) 18,368 square-foot data center, making it one of the largest in Europe with more than 47,000 square feet.
According to a report from Budapest-based news service Portfolio (portfolio.hu), the new wing took eight months to build and features environmentally-friendly features and sound insulation. Magyar Telekom offers fixed-line and mobile telecommunications services with nearly 4.9 million subscribers.
“Magyar Telekom Group has added data centre services to its portfolio after thorough preparation,” company spokesperson György Simó told Portfolio. “The business results have justified the decision to acquire Dataplex: the world-standard infocommunications infrastructure services have attracted a host of Hungarian, regional and global customers to the Budapest facility of Dataplex.
“At the end of last year Dataplex approached the maximum of its capacities. In 2007, the data center provider netted HUF 3 billion [12.7 million euro] revenue and recorded 30 percent growth over the previous year, despite the international economic crisis and skyrocketing energy costs.”
According to Szabó, the facility is Hungary’s largest IT infrastructure expansion project this decade.
Earlier in the month, Magyar Telekom announced it would re-brand its T-Com, T-Online and T-Kábel, as T-Home in September.
Also in August, T-Online subscribers numbered 500,000, accounting for a third of Hungary’s total 1.5 million broadband internet subscriptions.
