LookSmart, BellSouth Partner for Search

By theWHIR.com , November 21, 2003

November 21, 2003 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- Internet search solution provider LookSmart (looksmart.com) and telecommunications carrier BellSouth (bellsouth.com), publisher of print and Internet versions of the yellow pages in the Southeastern United States, said this week that they have entered into a partnership to help advertisers with BellSouth achieve exposure through search results across the Internet.

Atlanta-based BellSouth said it will offer Real Search Engine Solutions, a bundled solution to help Yellow Pages advertisers get listed across LookSmart's partner distribution network via paid search inclusion. In addition, BellSouth will promote RealPages.com, its online destination for Yellow Page services, via LookSmart LookListings.

"This is the first major US agreement between providers of traditional Yellow Pages and Internet search," said Tony Mamone, vice president of sales and marketing for San Francisco-based LookSmart. "We've always believed that paid search inclusion was the right vehicle to bridge the gap between offline and online lead generation, and we're pleased that BellSouth shares our belief. RealPages.com is an ideal match for us, because they're known as the leader in providing media solutions for local businesses in the Southeast."

LookSmart paid inclusion and auction-based keyword search results are distributed through top portals and Internet service providers including Lycos, Road Runner, InfoSpace, CNET, Cox Interactive Media and search services such as Inktomi.

"This is a groundbreaking deal for our industry," said Charles Stubbs, president of BellSouth IntelliVentures, the BellSouth advertising & publishing subsidiary that operates RealPages.com. "We're pleased to offer businesses in the Southeast another way to reach their target audience with a new and highly effective vehicle that's a natural complement to traditional Yellow Pages advertising."

October 2009 - Web Hosting's All Star Team
This has been, for us, one of the most interesting, exciting and challenging build-ups to an issue of the magazine yet, Web Hosting's All Star Team. The balloting process was our first experiment with a kind of user participation we're planning to do a lot more with in the months to come. We had thousands of ballots submitted, with hundreds of write-in suggestions and a demonstration of user engagement that has us feeling super positive about the project.

July 2009 - What am I Worth?
One of the interesting luxuries of working on a project like the printed WHIR magazine is that it allows us to play with things like our point of view from one issue to the next. In recent months we've been giving added attention to the kind of practical and applicable advice aimed at smaller hosts and resellers. This issue carries on with that point of view, asking, in our cover story, "what am I worth?" It's a complicated question without a clear-cut answer.

May 2009 - The Blueprint for a Small Web Host
I was a little surprised by how difficult it became to see this idea through. We set out to assemble a blueprint for a small hosting business, but butted up pretty quickly against the general impossibility of covering all the territory that was out there to be covered. The basic constraints of a printed magazine, and the less-than-infinite amount of time we had available forced us to face the fact that we could never produce an exhaustive guide to starting a hosting company.
