(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The Linux Foundation website (www.linuxfoundation.org) is down after a security breach detected on September 8, according to several reports on Monday. The breach affected LinuxFoundation.org and Linux.com, as well as subdomains, according to a statement.

“The Linux Foundation made this decision in the interest of extreme caution and security best practices. We believe this breach was connected to the intrusion on kernel.org,” the landing page on its website read.

kernel.org is still down for maintenance after a trojan infected the PC of a kernel developer and kernel.org servers in August, according to a report by the Register. Passwords and user interactions were logged during the compromise, according to the report.

Information Week says kernel.org does not house its code base, it only distributes it.

The Linux Foundation says its infrastructure houses a variety of services and programs including Open Printing, Linux Mark and Linux Foundation, among others. However, it says it does not include the Linux kernel or its code repositories.

The consortium doesn’t know the full extent of the breach but recommends users change passwords once the website is back online.

The Linux Foundation says it is in the process of restoring services and auditing all systems.

“Our team is working around the clock to restore these important services. We are working with authorities and exercising both extreme caution and diligence. Services will begin coming back online in the coming days and will keep you informed every step of the way,” according to its website.

The security breach on kernel.org occurred on August 12 and was not detected until 17 days later, so some reports (including this one on IT World) are wondering if the latest breach occurred around the same time.
