Cloud marketplace Standing Cloud announced on Tuesday that it will make one-click hosting of enterprise open source portal Liferay Portal available on more than 15 public clouds.

Liferay powered by Standing Cloud will help users evaluate Liferay Portal with a 30-day, fully functioning hosted demo in the cloud, and upgrade seamlessly to the public cloud provider of their choice once the free trial expires.

According to its website, Liferay Portal ships with broad product capabilities including content and document management with Microsoft Office integration, web publishing and shared workspaces, enterprise collaboration, social networking, and enterprise portals and identity management. There are currently around 500,000 deployments of Liferay Portal worldwide.

After the trial, users can upgrade and choose their preferred hosting provider, data center and geography, with options including Rackspace, AWS, HP Cloud, and Microsoft Windows Azure. Last week, Standing Cloud announced a similar agreement with SetSeed CMS whereby customers could set up and run multiple SetSeed sites or spin up dev or test environments. Cloud provider Flexiant is another one of Standing Cloud’s customers, using the platform to give end users access to web app deployment.

“The ability to host Liferay Portal through Standing Cloud further accelerates our platform’s readiness for use in cloud-hosted environments,” Brian Kim, chief operating officer for Liferay said in a statement. “Enabling Liferay customers to choose from more than 15 leading hosting providers from a single interface is a key benefit and unique advantage of Standing Cloud, and we’re pleased to be working with them.”

Liferay can run on any application server, and has flexible scripting support, and now with Standing Cloud, Liferay deployments are portable from cloud-to-cloud, further eliminating vendor lock-in.

Standing Cloud enables Liferay users to quickly add capacity or move to another cloud to protect against downtime and service outages.

According to the press release, Standing Cloud uses scripted deployments rather than binary images or pre-configured packages so it offers increased development flexiblity, even for customized Liferay deployments.

Through Standing Cloud’s automated application lifecycle management features, Liferay customers get access to a range of services including 24/7 server monitoring and backups, version upgrades and resource scaling.

“Providing single-click managed hosting, provisioning, deployment and management of Liferay Portal on a wide range of cloud providers at a simple monthly bundled price with no cloud lock-in is a great value-add for Liferay and their customers,” Michael Ficco, vice president of business development for Standing Cloud said in a statement. “By reducing the hassles of downloading software and configuring servers, and making it easy to spin up trial ‘test drives’ and upgrade seamlessly after trial, we’re excited to help Liferay grow its customer base in the cloud.”

Talk back: Have you offered a 30-day trial before with the option to upgrade? Do you think more clients would upgrade if it was as flexible and simple as Standing Cloud promises to make the process? Let us know in a comment.
