Leveraging Hybrid Computing for Customization, Scalability and Cost-Effectiveness, with Rackspace

Andrew Schroepfer, VP of strategy for Rackspace.

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — In the third cloud trends track session of day one at HostingCon 2010, Rackspace’s Andrew Schroepfer delivered his presentation, “Leveraging Hybrid Computing for Customization, Scalability and Cost-Effectiveness”.

He started off his session by noting this morning’s launch of OpenStack, which provides the code behind Rackspace’s Cloud Files and Cloud Servers technology, which will allow any individual or company to develop their own cloud solution.

Schroepfer said that it is critical for companies to be able to have their data portable and not locked into any one platform, making hybrid cloud hosting the most effective choice.

He explained that the current state of the cloud shows that everyone is adopting the cloud, making it a “marathon, not a sprint.”

He knocked down the myths that many prevent people from adopting the cloud, such as lack of security or the fear of being locked into a single vendor.

Instead, he explains that these naysayers are more concerned about who is controlling their data, emphasizing how security will always be an issue in any hosting environment.

He stressed how cloud technology is both affordable and easy to deploy, stating that every company should have a public environment option for running their applications because it gives them more flexibility.
