Level 3 Restores Connection to Cogent

October 11, 2005 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — A peering feud between Cogent Communications (cogentco.com) and Level 3 Communications (level3.com) that reportedly cut service to Web hosts and other customers last week appears to have been resolved.

Colorado-based Level 3 said in a statement on Friday that it had restored its connection to Cogent after unilaterally cutting the company off last Wednesday because of a dispute over their peering arrangement.

Cogent and Level 3 had previously exchanged traffic free of charge. Peering, as the practice is known, is mutually beneficial when both sides exchange similar volumes of traffic. However, Level 3 terminated the relationship because if felt it was carrying an unfair share.

Both companies have said they are willing to return to the negotiating table.
