(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — One of Europe’s largest business hosting providers, LeaseWeb (www.leaseweb.com), has a signed an agreement with virtualization software provider VMware (www.vmware.com), to let its customers rent rather than buy VMware software for their web environments.
According to LeaseWeb’s Tuesday announcement, the agreement will make LeaseWeb Europe’s VMware Service Provider Program, a program launched in June 2007 that gives only a select few hosting providers the ability to supply licenses for virtual servers on the basis of periodic rental agreements. The company said that LeaseWeb clients will gain easier access to virtualized hosting, as well as more flexibility.
“This cooperation will allow us to provide our hosting clients with virtualized dedicated servers in a quick and scalable manner,” LeaseWeb managing director Con Zwinkels said in a statement. “LeaseWeb clients will have the ability to pay their licensing fees periodically, ‘by virtual server by month.’ Thus, they will no longer have to make costly start-up investments for virtualized hosting. The partnership program will therefore make it much easier for our clients to switch to a virtualized hosting environment.”
According to Zwinkels, the ability to sign periodic rental agreements will also add flexibility to virtualized hosting solutions, allowing clients to quickly adapt their Web infrastructure to their current needs. “Furthermore, it will make their Web infrastructure highly scalable and eliminate the hassle of having to deal with complex licensing models,” he said. “The ability to rent also improves the efficiency of virtualized hosting environments. Clients only pay for actual use.”
According to the company, LeaseWeb’s virtualization platform is based on VMware architecture and is especially attractive for the enterprise market and large businesses, providing them a highly scalable and available web environment, as well as simpler migration process of virtual dedicated servers.
As the European VSPP, LeaseWeb will be showcasing its new services at VMworld Europe 2009 in Cannes from February 24 to 26.
