Despite initial claims that momentum for the new G-Cloud program was strong, a new report by Six Degrees Group finds that nearly 90 percent of UK councils and authorities haven’t used the G-Cloud service to purchase cloud services, and three-quarters are not even sure what it is used for.
The survey of over 300 councils finds that only 38 have used G-Cloud to procure cloud services. Introduced in October, G-Cloud 4 is the fourth iteration of the pre-approved group of cloud suppliers to the UK public sector, and has more than 1,000 suppliers on the approved list, including Six Degrees Group.
The findings show that despite the investment in getting the program off the ground, there has been no follow-through with communicating the purpose or benefits of the G-Cloud program.
“These statistics show that there is a communication issue from central government,” Campbell Williams, group strategy and marketing director at Six Degrees Group said. “Cloud services have the potential to be revolutionary for the public sector and G-Cloud is a framework specifically intended to make sourcing these services simple. However it’s clearly not doing its job for a huge number of councils and local authorities in the UK, which could otherwise be benefiting from the expenditure savings, innovations, agility and security of cloud computing.”
Globally, the government cloud market is expected to grow from $2.87 billion in 2013 to $18.48 billion in 2018. The G-Cloud marketplace was intended to offer public sector organizations in the UK an easy, streamlined way to procure cloud services, while offering smaller cloud service providers a chance to bid on cloud contracts on a level playing field.
