January 18, 2005 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — According to reports released Monday, New York-based Internet service provider Panix.com was working to recover its domain name, after what appeared to be a hijacking disrupted the company’s email services.

Panix.com said the domain’s ownership had been transferred Friday evening to a company in Australia, the domain name server records had been moved to the UK and its email had been redirected to a company in Canada.

The company warned customers that they would be unable to access the Panix.com domain, or would be redirected to a false site. Email sent to the Panix.com domain was being redirected, and should be considered lost or compromised, the company said.

Representatives said the company was having difficulty determining how the transfer could have taken place without Panix’s permission, and that its dealings with its registrar were not going as smoothly as it would have liked.

The company suggested that the Panix.net domain could be used instead of Panix.com as a workaround until the domain was restored.

According to reports released Tuesday, the company had recovered its domain from the Australian company, and expected to be operating as normal within 24 hours.
