ISP EarthLink Goes Offline on Earth Day

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Thousands of customers have been left without email or Internet access on Wednesday after Internet service provider EarthLink (www.earthlink.com) suffered a major outage, according to early reports by Computerworld.

The company has not yet offered an explanation for the cause of the outage, and as of 5:00 p.m. EST the EarthLink website is still down, while the company’s phone numbers have also been disconnected.

Computer World also reports that its inquiries to the EarthLink public relations division concerning the cause and status of the outage were not immediately returned.

Reports from many upset EarthLink customers started trickling in as early as 10:30 a.m. EST Wednesday via their EarthLink email accounts on Twitter.

“Wake-up call to EarthLink,” wrote one Twitter user named meechybee. “You may need a Twitter page of your own. We need updates (and your phones aren’t working).”

Another user, QuiCacet, posted the message, “EarthLink down on Earth Day. Coincidence or dastardly conspiracy?”

The Atlanta-based ISP serves about 2.8 million subscribers in the United States. The company provides a range of different connections, including dial-up, cable and DSL, as well as web hosting and VoIP services.

Last week, Palo Alto, California-based VoIP provider ooma also suffered an outage, which the company said was the result of Internet connectivity issues at its upstream service provider, Internap Network Services in Atlanta.
