October 29, 2003 -- (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) -- New Zealand-based domain registrar and Web hosting company iServe (iserve.co.nz) has accused New Zealand telecommunications company Telecom (telecom.co.nz) of stealing its name for a new service it is offering, according to a report published in the New Zealand Herald.
According to the report, the company's lawyers have written to Telecom demanding that it cease using the iServe name for the service.
"The first we heard about it was when our help desk fielded a call from someone demanding they fix a problem with their mobile connection," Cottle told the New Zealand Herald. "We didn't know what they were talking about. There was lots of confusion. Then, a couple of days later, we had a customer who called us in a panic because they had seen iServe product on the Telecom site and thought Telecom had bought us."
Cottle said if Telecom refused to stop using the name, there could be a drawn-out process to enforce the trademark.
