(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — While earning considerable nerd cred under its old name, 54f3.com — “Safe” in L33t computer language — has re-branded as Site Security Monitor (www.sitesecuritymonitor.com), which is just the one of the steps in the company’s “re-brand, release, repair” approach to improve online safety.
According to its announcement this week, the Canadian company brings more to the table than standard web security scanning — it has developed custom services and unique applications. The service scans each website for holes in coding and provides direction on how to repair them so hackers cannot gain entry, steal visitor details and ruin a company’s reputation. SSM said that on average, a website will usually has at least 40 of these vulnerabilities, and the company found that a popular dating site had no less than 1,400 vulnerabilities in its security system.
“Since we don’t require a software installation, we are able to start scanning a site in seconds and have a report ready quickly,” SSM managing director and regular WHIR security blogger Jason Remillard said in a statement, noting that the company scanned over 2,000 new sites in February as part of its free malware scan program, and such malware can have an immediately harmful effect on these sites.
“Website traffic is affected the instant Google notices that you are hosting malware — the ugly red warning screen is thrown up and you’re instantly de-indexed,” Remillard said. “It can be weeks before your users stop getting notified too, so it’s important to prevent these things happening in the first place with web security scanning and monitoring such as ours.”
While the company’s enterprise-grade web security scanning software remains similar to the one used to protect websites previously, however, its availability has changed considerably through the use of WordPress applications and the introduction of new pricing, and by paying attention to customer needs and feedback. Remillard concludes, “Our customers were involved for the beginning – helping pick the name, approving our new logos and security seal graphics – its been a lot of fun and we are thankful to our clients for their assistance!”
