Intermedia Adds New East Coast Data Center

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Software-as-a-service provider Intermedia (www.intermedia.net) has added a fourth data center location to support its Microsoft Hosted Exchange messaging and collaboration solutions, providing the infrastructure they need to work efficiently and provide customers the highest quality hosted messaging services.

According to the company’s Tuesday announcement, the East Coast data center will meet Intermedia’s high demand from small-and medium-sized businesses to provide enterprise-grade hosted email and offer added reliability.

Intermedia’s new location is operated by data center operator and Internet exchange provider Switch and Data (www.switchanddata.com). The Switch and Data site offers more than 200 watts per square foot of power and cooling capacity, and full N+1 redundancy for its UPS, generator and cooling infrastructure, helping Intermedia offer a 99.999 percent uptime service level agreement for its Hosted Exchange services.

Intermedia chief operating officer Jonathan McCormick said SaaS is becoming increasingly accepted in the market, making Intermedia’s Hosted Exchange especially attractive to SMBs. “We are focused on providing a premium service and continue to invest heavily in building and operating top quality enterprise-grade infrastructures to our customers. These new data centers, along with our three existing North Americandata centers are world-class facilities that we built with hardware from Dell, EMC, Cisco and others to provide the best possible service to our customers.”

The Switch and Data data center is interconnected with other sites in the metro region’s premier carrier hotels, providing access to more than 300 networks, making it one of the most densely interconnected data centers in North America. While Intermedia did not specify which East Coast facility in which it occupies space, it is likely a New York facility because locations in that city offer metro connectivity.

Switch and Data chief marketing officer Ernie Sampera said in a statement, “Intermedia focuses on providing a high quality infrastructure to its customers, and we are pleased that they have selected one of our east cost data centers to host their newest environment.”

According to the company, Intermedia’s data centers are rated tier-4, making them “fundamentally immune to planned and unplanned downtime,” according to the Uptime Institute’s definition, which – in practice – minimizes email downtime.
