Intel Ships New Xeon Processors

September 12, 2002 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Intel Corporation (Intel.com) said on Wednesday that it has unveiled its Intel Xeon processor for two-way workstation and server platforms at 2.80 GHz and 2.60 GHz.

The new products, says Intel, are coming to market a full quarter earlier than originally anticipated. They offer 512 KB of level two cache and are built on Intel?s 0.13-micron process technology.

“Intel Xeon processor-based platforms continue to lead the industry in terms of performance and value, and we’re seeing great momentum for our platforms worldwide,” says Lisa Hambrick, director, Intel Enterprise Processor Marketing. “We’re designing and manufacturing our enterprise products faster than anticipated and expect a number of OEMs and channel distributors to ship systems based on these products this week and throughout the year.”

Intel says dual-processing systems are popular in workstation configurations for applications like digital content creation, mechanical and electrical design, financial analysis and 3D modeling. A number of manufacturers are planning the release of workstations based on the new processor speeds starting this week.

Front-end Internet servers featuring one or two processors, says Intel, are used for Web hosting, data caching, search engines, security and streaming media applications.

The Intel 860 chipset for dual-processing Xeon-based workstations is also available. The chipset uses RDRAM and provides graphics support with a dedicated AGP 4X port. For dual-processing servers, Intel is offering the E700 chipset.
