Infinera To Upgrade TeliaSonera's US Network

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Wholesale cross-border IP, voice and wholesale services provider TeliaSonera International Carrier (www.teliasoneraic.com), an affiliate of Scandinavia’s largest telco, TeliaSonera (www.teliasonera.com), has selected high-capacity optical transmission equipment provider Infinera (www.infinera.com) to upgrade its nationwide US network.

One of the leading pan-European wholesale providers of quality cross-border IP, voice and wholesale services, TeliaSonera International Carrier is deploying the Infinera DTN to support its vision of becoming “the global IP carrier of choice,” according to Infinera’s Thursday announcement. Infinera’s easy-to-use digital architecture will improve the flexibility, quality, responsiveness and service of TeliaSonera International Carrier’s US wholesale operations.

The Infinera DTN was the first and is still the only optical networking system powered by photonic integrated circuits. Deployed worldwide in long-haul and metro core networks, the Infinera DTN combines high-capacity DWDM transport, integrated digital bandwidth management, and GMPLS-powered service intelligence in a single platform. Among others, wholesale telecommunications provider RETN (www.retn.net) used Infinera DTN to strengthen its US and European networks less than a year ago.

Recently, Infinera pushed the envelope further, having demonstrated record-breaking 400 Gbps optical capacity in a single pair of chips using complex modulation formats under lab conditions, delivering up to 80 percent power savings compared to conventional wavelength optics based on discrete optical components.

“We are happy to have selected Infinera for TeliaSonera International Carrier’s US network,” TeliaSonera International Carrier broadband services vice president and head of IP production Regina Donato-Lundgren said in a statement. “We have undertaken a thorough assessment of options open to us and have been impressed by the strong solution being offered, which allows us to be at the cutting-edge of technological advances in the industry whilst maintaining a competitive cost base and further increasing service levels in our networks.”

The major telecommunications provider in Sweden and Finland, TeliaSonera is also the largest operator in the Nordic and Baltic regions, where it provides landline, mobile and broadband services. Its international division, TeliaSonera International Carrier, is one of the leading pan-European wholesale providers of quality cross-border IP, voice and wholesale services. It already owns more than 43,000 kilometers (27,000 miles) of fiber optic networking across 20 countries worldwide.

Infinera chief executive officer Jagdeep Singh said he is delighted that TeliaSonera chose Infinera for its network. “This is the latest example of a large, forward-thinking incumbent carrier benefiting from the advantages of Infinera’s digital architecture based on large-scale photonic integration.”
