June 16, 2008 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The Silicon Valley Leadership Group (svlg.net) announced on Monday it is launching its first annual Data Center Energy Summit 2008 (svlg.net/events/datacenter0626/) on June 26 in Santa Clara, California.

The all-day symposium, which is being thrown in partnership with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, will take place at the Sun Microsystems campus and is dedicated to sustainable data center design, energy efficient engineering and operational practices for green computing, says the organization.

Although most events in the hosting industry these days have a particular concentration of sessions surrounding data center energy issues and “green” energy trends in general, this event seems to be placing its entire focus on these prevalent issues.

In August, IDG World Expo’s second annual Next Generation Data Center Conference and Expo will be accommodating quite a bit of discussion surrounding “green” energy trends as well. According to a previous announcement, the organization said its upcoming event will “address energy consumption and environmental concerns within a data center in its keynote presentations and overall conference agenda, as industry experts pass onto attendees on ways they can increase efficiency across their infrastructure.”

The Silicon Valley Leadership Group’s inaugural event will showcase the results of 11 different green computing initiatives presented by data center operators several Silicon Valley organizations including Digital Realty Trust, Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, NetApp, Oracle, Sun Microsystems and Symantec.

The summit will feature an analysis by Accenture, which compares the actual measurable results of the above case studies to the various energy saving scenarios developed by Environmental Protection Agency experts in 2007.

There will also be an interactive panel discussion with Teri Tekai, the chief information officer for the State of California and with CIOs from Sun Microsystems, Symantec and VMware. Attendees will also get to check out a keynote delivered by Subodh Bapat, VP and engineer for Sun Microsystems.

The organization says the evening will wrap up with an evening tour and reception at one of the “Silicon Valley’s premier data centers,” though the specific facility remains undisclosed.

“Our data center efficiency initiative saves both energy and money,” says Carl Guardino, president and CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group. “Silicon Valley is proving once again that green is gold.”

Founded in 1978 by David Packard of Hewlett-Packard, The Silicon Valley Leadership Group says it represents 260 of Silicon Valley’s most “respected employers on issues, programs and campaigns that affect the economic health and quality of life in Silicon Valley, including energy, transportation, education, housing, health care, tax policies, economic vitality and the environment.”
