Idera Releases Version 5.0 of Server Backup Software (formerly R1Soft CDP)

Server backup software provider Idera announced on Tuesday that it has released version 5.0 of the Idera Server Backup tool, until recently known as R1Soft Continuous Data Protection, introducing support for some new systems as well as new pricing around virtual environments.

In a quick call with the WHIR, David Wartell, Idera VP of server backup and former CEO of R1Soft, says the biggest change in the new release involves the new support for virtual machine backup. He says the systems can recognize virtual servers and adjust prices accordingly. Idera Server Backup 5.0 is priced at $20 per virtual machine or $200 per physical server.

Wartell says the company has now built out a service provider licensing agreement model, a pricing model that customers have been requesting for a while. The SPLA model enables service providers distributing the backup services to their own customers to pay for the software on a more as-you-go model, which lowers the up-front costs and makes it easier for service providers to profit from delivering a given solution right out of the gate.

Version 5.0 also includes support for Windows Server 2012, he says.

While R1Soft was a well-known brand in the web hosting space, given its focus on providing tools built specifically to the needs of hosting service providers, Idera has an even bigger presence in the application and server management space, providing a variety of administration tools for platforms like SQL server and SharePoint.

Idera acquired R1Soft back in 2007 – a deal that went a little under the radar in the hosting space – and continued operating it as a separate brand for several years. This summer the company began transitioning the R1Soft brand to become part of the Idera brand, though there weren’t many big changes.

At HostingCon in August, Amy Muehleman of Idera talked to WHIR TV about the R1Soft brand’s transition to become part of Idera.

In many ways the press release announcing the new software version seems like it might be geared more toward introducing the former R1Soft product portfolio to an audience more familiar with what was already being offered under the Idera brand.

In the press release announcing the new version, Idera says Server Backup 5.0 can deliver “all the key features and functionality needed for effective and speedy backup” at a significant discount – in some cases as little as 20 percent – from legacy backup systems.

“There is a gap in the market between high-end legacy backup solutions and single-server tools that don’t scale. Companies need reliable solutions that can meet the needs of the environment they have today and the growing physical and virtual server farm they will have tomorrow,” said Rick Pleczko CEO of Idera, quoted in the press release. “We are changing the value price equation with the delivery of Idera Server Backup 5.0, making it easy and cost effective for anyone to backup every server in their datacenter.”

In a Facebook post made Tuesday, Idera said a free trial of the Idera Server Backup 5.0 solution is available at the company’s website.
