ICANN to Operate Privately, Report Says

November 16, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — According to reports, the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (icann.org) says it will operate as a private entity after its agreement with the United States Department of Commerce expires in 2006.

Paul Twomey, chief executive for ICANN, said the organization, which oversees management of the domain name and Internet protocol address system, will cut ties with the US Department of Commerce in 2006 and firmly dismissed the possibility that it would ever be under the control of an international organization.
