December 13, 2006 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (icann.org) recently announced it has made an agreement with DotAsia Organization (dotasia.org) to create a .asia domain name extension as a way to unify businesses and other users in the Asia-Pacific region, according to reports.
ICANN approved the .asia domain in October and signed the agreement last week with DotAsia, an organization made up of groups that run domain names for China, Japan, South Korea, Vietnam and other countries.
ICANN says the addition of .asia will bring the number of Internet suffixes up to 266 and similar to the creation of .eu for the European Union, the new name would be an addition to domains already available for individual countries, like .cn for China and .jp for Japan.
Reports say registrations for names are expected to open in six to nine months. Prices will vary, and trademark holders will get the first picks, says the organization.
ICANN also said this week that it is considering eliminating some outdated domain name extensions, according to reports.
