ICANN Responsibilities Extended

September 23, 2002 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — On Friday, the US Department of Commerce approved the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN) to continue managing the Internet?s global addressing system for another year.

The DoC said on Friday that the government agency has extended ICANN?s contracts for the Internet?s domain name system, which were scheduled to expire at the end of this month. While it extended the contract, however, the department said it was disappointed that progress on certain contractual tasks has moved so slowly.

As part of the contract renewals, ICANN has agreed to continue its efforts at internal reform to address widespread concern about the transparency of the organization?s decision-making processes. The DoC says ICANN has moved too slowly in implementing an open, consensus-based system of governance.

ICANN said it was glad the government agency was going to be supportive in seeing that the organization meets the goals laid out for it.
