ICANN, the organization responsible for top-level domain names, has delegated the first new generic Top-Level Domains (gTLDs) to their approved domain registries, who are now in a position to execute the final processes required to make their domain names available.
This is as part of ICANN’s planned expansion of the Domain Name System from its current 22 gTLDs to as many as 1,400 new names.
The four new names delegated are شبكة (Arabic for “web/network”, and overseen by registry International Domain Registry Pty. Ltd), онлайн (Cyrillic for “online”, and overseen by CORE Association), сайт (Cyrillic for “site”, and also overseen by CORE Association) and 游戏 (Chinese for “game(s)”, and overseen by Spring Fields, LLC).
The new extensions are not yet available for registration, but they’ll be coming online in the next few weeks or months as the new registry operators finalise their launch plans, contract with registrars and go through a full launch process.
It’s also worth noting that the newly delegated gTLDs are in non-Latin scripts, reflecting one of ICANN’s priorities of helping shape a more globally-inclusive Internet. The application window for new gTLDs opened on 12 January 2012, resulting in 1,930 applications, which were then prioritized to determine the order in which they would be processed.
A searchable list of applicants is available from ICANN. Registrar Blacknight has created the site dotwhat.co, which further breaks down applications based on TLD applied for, registrar, countries of origin and more.
