December 2, 2005 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Final approval for the .xxx domain has been put on hold after it was taken off the agenda at the ICANN (icann.org) meetings currently being held in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The .xxx domain would create an exclusive space for sites displaying adult content. Final negotiations were expected to conclude at this round of ICANN meetings.
Reports say the decision was delayed because ICANN and other government organizations wanted to continue discussing the merits of operating a .xxx domain. ICANN chairman Vint Cerf made the unexpected announcement.
The .xxx domain faces considerable opposition from conservative groups in the US while supporters argue the domain would make it easier to organize adult material on the Internet.
Approval for the .xxx domain was also delayed back in September.
