(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — IBM announced on Monday it has completed the acquisition of Platform Computing, a Toronto-based cluster, grid and cloud management software for distributed computing environments. The financial terms were not disclosed in the press release.
This is the second cloud management software company IBM has acquired in a week, following last week’s acquisition of Green Hat, a software quality and testing solutions for the cloud and other environments.
The company first announced in October that it would acquire Platform Computing, whose software helps clients create, integrate and manage shared computing environments that are used in compute- and data-intensive applications such as simulations, computer modeling and analytics.
These technical and high performance computing applications fuel product development, critical business decisions and breakthrough science in financial services, manufacturing, digital media, oil and gas, life sciences, government, research and education.
Platform Computing said it has more than 2,000 clients, including 23 of the top 30 largest global enterprises.
“The acquisition of Platform Computing will help accelerate IBM’s growth in smarter computing – a key initiative in IBM’s Smarter Planet strategy – by extending the reach of our HPC offerings into the high growth segment of technical computing,” said Helene Armitage, general manager of IBM Systems Software. “Our intent is to enable clients to uncover insights from growing volumes of data so they can take actions that optimize business results.”
IBM will combine Platform Computing’s software with its high performance systems and software to more effectively serve enterprise clients who are transitioning to technical computing.
As a result, these customers will be able to boost application performance, improve infrastructure flexibility and reduce time to results.
IBM said it intends to support Platform Computing’s software on heterogeneous systems and continue to work with many of Platform Computing’s existing partners.
Platform Computing will be integrated into IBM Systems and Technology Group.
