January 13, 2005 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Web hosting provider Hurricane Electric (he.net) announced on Thursday that it has connected to an Internet exchange point in Amsterdam called AMS-IX, one of Europe’s largest.
Hurricane Electric’s node in Amsterdam’s NIKHEF facility is connected by OC48 to the company’s own OC48 backbone. The new exchange point will provide Hurricane Electric’s global network with additional redundancy, and create shorter packet routes to other networks.
“We are excited about the expansion to Amsterdam because it will give us even better performance in Europe and over our entire global network,” said Hurricane Electric president Mike Leber. “The company is now offering direct connections in Amsterdam. The first offer is a transit promotion, allowing those with their own AS number and address space to receive 100 Mbps free with the purchase of 100 Mbps or more via Gigabit Ethernet. The second offer is flat rate Gigabit Ethernet transit for $17,000 per month.
