August 27, 2004 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Hewlett-Packard (hp.com) maintained its leading position in worldwide server shipments for the ninth consecutive quarter, according to figures released by research and analysis firm IDC (idc.com). IDC’s August Quarterly Server Tracker showed that HP shipped nearly double the number of servers that IBM did in the same period.
According to IDC, HP was also the leading vendor for factory revenue and servers shipped worldwide for the x86, Linux and Windows server markets. HP tops the list with 32.5 percent factory revenue and 30.7 percent unit market share for the three major operating systems combined.
HP continued to lead the Linux server market with 30.8 percent factory revenue market share. The company also grew x86 server factory revenue more than three times as fast as the market year-over-year, gaining the leading market share position by 3.5 points. The gains were made at the expense of Dell, which lost US market share.
