(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Data center industry organization Open Data Center Alliance (www.opendatacenteralliance.org) announced on Thursday that HP and CA Technologies have joined the organization. Now, ODCA now includes representation from more than 90 percent of the virtualization software market and more than two-thirds of the server hardware market, according to the report.

According to the report, its members will triple cloud deployment in the next two years. This adoption is five times faster than Q2 2011 market forecasts, ODCA says.

Established in October 2010, the Open Data Center Alliance includes more than 280 companies spanning multiple continents and vertical industries. Recently, ODCA partnered with the Open Compute Project to define system and data center specifications.

“The ODCA membership comprises some of the largest adopters of cloud computing across the globe. Today’s news illustrates how rapidly our membership is implementing cloud in internal environments and with service providers,” ODCA Board of Directors Chairperson Marvin Wheeler said in a statement. “We’re delighted by the rapid progress to set standards for cloud security and management, and collaboration with data center industry leaders to deliver open, interoperable cloud solutions.”

According to the press release, internal enterprise is leading cloud adoption growth and more than 40 percent of members are expecting to run up to 40 percent of their internal IT in cloud environments in the next two years.

More than 30 percent of ODCA members identified human resources, legal and finance applications as primary targets for enterprise cloud adoption. According to the report, sales and marketing tools are also targets for public cloud implementation.

ODCA members identified application migration, secure federation and simplified management as top challenges to broad cloud adoption. Collaborations with the Cloud Security Alliance and Distributed Management Task Force will help encourage broader cloud adoption, according to the organization.

ODCA says it will align its cloud security assurance and monitoring usage models with CSA’s cloud audit specification and STAR (Security, Trust, and Registry) program. According to the report, the first cloud security standards will be delivered in 2012.

The organization also says that it will align DMTF’s OVF specification with its VM interoperability usage model to enable transparent management of virtual machines. Results from this collaboration will also be apparent in 2012, according to the press release.

“A tripling of cloud operations is 5 times faster than our most current forecasts of broad cloud services growth,” said Matthew Eastwood, group vice president and general manager of IDC’s Enterprise Platform Group. “By bringing together leading edge cloud adopters and leading providers, and establishing collaborations with key standards bodies, the ODCA has created a central source to address the top challenges enterprises face in adoption of cloud. The organization has produced a unique opportunity for accelerated, customer prioritized innovation, which is reflected in this aggressive forecast of cloud adoption.”

Organizations like the ODCA are becoming more popular as enterprises demand more regulation around cloud security and service providers of all kinds are sharing their support through participation.
