How to Become Owner of Facebook.com for Less Than 10 Dollars with Networking4All

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) – In the first keynote presentation of day two of WorldHostingDays 2011, CTO Paul van Brouwershaven of security provider Networking4All (www.networking4all.com) gave attendees a basic guide on how companies ought to approach selecting the right domain name for registration.

Titled “How to Become Owner of Facebook.com for Less Than 10 Dollars”, Brouwershaven began his presentation by looking at the history behind the domain name registration of Facebook.

As many of you already know, Facebook was first registered in 2004 as TheFacebook.com, but eventually dropped “The” and registered the domain name accordingly.

Brouwershaven explained that domain names are limited to a maximum of 63 characters, leaving room for a massive amount of possibilities.

In the Internet age, many people begin brainstorming possible company names by checking to see if the domain name is available first, rather than deciding on a company name first and seeing if the domain is available.

He also recommended that it is good to first register a domain name in your mother tongue rather than focusing on other languages.

Brouwershaven then went on to look at the introduction of different top level domains over the last 30 years, including gTLDs like .net, ccTLDs like .us, and upcoming new gTLDs like .shop and .paris.

These new TLDs will expand the possibilities of new domain names for people to register, providing new opportunities for domain buyers.

He also brought up security issues in domain registration, using the case study of an individual registering Hotmail.net in 2009 for the purpose of hacking into people’s email accounts to steal private information.

He stressed that companies should protect their brand. But rather than registering their company name under all the other possible TLDs available – which would be an endless and costly challenge – companies should purchase EV SSL certificates to ensure the validity of their website.
