(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — London, UK-based music website Last.fm (www.lastfm.com) suffered an outage on Sunday caused by extreme heat, knocking the site offline for several hours.

Those trying to visit Last.fm Sunday evening were automatically directed to an error page.

The website tracks its members’ music listening habits and recommends songs based on these habits as well as their friends’ music tastes.

Throughout the downtime, the company kept its visitors up-to-date, directing them to an emergency page.

The company also updated its Twitter page so that its 17,000 followers could stay informed about its current status.

“Temps dropping slowly as the sun sets in London, and the datacenter operator’s engineers are working on the chillers,” read one Last.fm Twitter update.

The website’s systems administrator also posted a screen capture of the temperature at the data center in a graph, which said, “A chiller failed, leading to a high ambient temperature, leading to five other chillers failing.”
