UPDATE Oct. 17, 2013: An earlier version of this article wrongly asserted that Bigstep is a spin-off of Hostway. Hostway is not affiliated with Bigstep.
The IaaS market for big data has a new player, as
Bigstep launched Tuesday to offer bare metal public cloud infrastructure in the UK.
Bigstep uses latest generation HP servers with no hypervisor and all-SSD storage to provide the fast performance without I/O bottlenecks. Cloudera, which offers a data platform to enterprises and requires fast processing of big data, is one of the partners involved in benchmarking and testing Bigstep.
“Big data demands high powered computing and not using a hypervisor means Bigstep can provide 20-100 per cent more performance per resources than any virtual cloud,” said Ioana Hreninciuc, commercial director, Bigstep. “We believe we are the most powerful public computing infrastructure in the world and the perfect cloud for any organisation that is serious about crunching its big data in real-time and utilizing it to make informed and impactful business decisions.”
Bigstep offers this speed with cloud flexibility to allow customers access to this computing power cost-effectively. It also offers local storage, as well as private clouds, which can be built on top of their public cloud “using any hypervisor in the market.”
Bigstep currently operates a data center in Reading, and plans to open others across Europe in 2014, which will also allow it to offer users a choice of where their data is hosted to meet data privacy requirements.
Using no hypervisor greatly improves network latency, according to Bigstep, and with machines that have a maximum capacity of 44 GbE, the company believes it can offer 44 times more capacity than more traditional 1 Gbps uplinks.
The near future could hold big opportunities for European cloud providers. The European Commission is seeking to take advantage of the fallout from the PRISM program and encourage Europe’s cloud market to catch up to the US.
By positioning itself as the choice of the most demanding enterprises, Bigstep offers a unique IaaS solution to a market primed for growth.
