(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Managed hosting and colocation provider Hosting.com (www.hosting.com) has launched Cloud VPS, an enhanced version of its virtual private server solutions that provides customers unprecedented elasticity and control of their VPS environments using cloud-based technology.
According to Hosting.com’s Friday announcement, Cloud VPS’s hypervisor-based platform provides high availability, scalability and flexibility inherent to cloud infrastructures. Hosting.com selected the VMware vSphere software to build this new cloud infrastructure, offering independent virtual machines, a feature unavailable in most container-based VPS solutions.
“Hosting.com made the decision to move away from a container-based VPS platform to provide more flexibility and control from our customers,” Hosting.com infrastructure services director Matt Ferrari said in a statement. “Customer feedback and requests for a more dynamic offering that could easily scale or be migrated directly lead to the development of Cloud VPS.”
Customers will also have the ability to grow and easily migrate their Cloud VPS solutions to Hosting.com’s more robust Cloud Enterprise and Cloud Dedicated solutions.
Hosting.com Cloud Product manager Fred Strelzoff said Cloud VPS will be helpful in introducing many companies to the performance, functionality and pricing cloud hosting offers. “Cloud hosting has become a viable alternative to managed and dedicated hosting – similarly, we believe Cloud VPS will change the expectations of VPS consumers,” Strelzoff said in a statement.
Hosting.com is in the process of moving all existing VPS clients to the Cloud VPS infrastructure, which provides clients with additional resources. The base package for the prior .Net VPS solution for $89.00 per month from Hosting.com provided 512 MB RAM, 10 GB of virtual disk space, and 400 GB of monthly transfer. For $80.00 per month, Cloud VPS will provide the same amount of RAM, 30 GB of space and 500 GB of monthly transfer.
The Cloud VPS is the latest in a string of cloud announcements for Hosting.com. In June, Hosting.com merged its Cloud 9 cloud hosting solutions with hosting and colocation services provider HostMySite (www.hostmysite.com) and its Elastic Enterprise Computing following HostMySite’s acquisition of Hosting.com. The result was two new, immediately available products, Cloud 9 Enterprise and Cloud 9 Private.
