Highwinds Streams Earth Day Coverage

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — IP services and content distribution provider Highwinds Network Group (www.highwinds.com) streamed live online coverage of “Earth Day On The National Mall” in Washington DC using its content delivery network.

Hosted by Earth Day Network and produced by the Green Apple Festival (www.greenapplefestival.com), the live stream was available to online viewers for seven hours on Sunday afternoon both on Green Apple Festival’s website as well as on its MySpace page. Drawing approximately 100,000 people, Earth Day On The National Mall was emceed by actor Chevy Chase, headlined by The Flaming Lips.

Renowned director and producer of live interactive media Marc Scarpa produced the live webcast, as well as all live streams from the MySpace, Green Apple Festival and other websites. Highwinds and Scarpa previously worked together to successfully produce and stream a celebrity Oscar Night event in February.

“Based on the success of our previous webcast partnership, it was only natural for us to assemble the same expert team to achieve the same flawless results for the live webcast of Earth Day On The National Mall,” Scarpa said in a statement. “We were very pleased with our partners’ support to produce and stream this major Earth Day celebration to online audiences.”

Broadcast transmission, media services, communications, infrastructure and network solutions provider Arqiva (www.arqiva.com) prepared live video for distribution and provided satellite newsgathering trucks, transponder time, teleport services and live encoding services. It essentially served as the bridge between Scarpa’s production unit and the Highwinds CDN.

Video syndication and monetization technology provider Ooyala (www.ooyala.com) supported the event with its video player technology and video management platform, which simplifies the process of managing multiple online videos.

Highwinds president and chief executive officer Steve Miller said his company is honored to be selected to support the event. “Today, more than ever before, the call to all Americans to support green initiatives, consider the impact of their actions on the environment, and serve their individual communities through environmental volunteerism is resoundingly clear,” Miller said in a statement. “The entire team at Highwinds was pleased to play a part in delivering the Earth Day message and enthusiasm to global audiences.”
