(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Network Solutions (www.networksolutions.com) and the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (www.nfte.com) have named Newark, NJ high school student, Daliswan Morgan, 16, the winner of the national NFTE/Network Solutions Web Site Challenge.
NFTE is a non-profit organization that provides entrepreneurship education to young people from low-income communities. In celebration of Global Entrepreneurship Week, Network Solutions and NFTE partnered to promote entrepreneurship among urban youth by inviting NFTE students and alumni to design websites in support of their business plans using Network Solutions’ Web Site Starter Package.
According to the company’s Wednesday announcement, Morgan, who is an artist working in glass, jewelry and mosaic art, created a winning website for her business, Classic Mosiacs, receiving $500 from Network Solutions as a prize.
“Supporting students by helping them develop their ideas is invaluable to their future success in business,” NFTE events and alumni services director Suzanne Taylor said in a statement. “By helping them take these ideas online gives them tremendous professional opportunities in today’s marketplace.”
A recent small business survey conducted by Network Solutions and the University of Maryland’s Robert H. Smith School of Business found that building a website is one of the most important investments for small businesses can make, giving customers a place where they can see products and services, as well as a venue to communicate with via email.
“Daliswan’s website illustrates how easily a small business can improve their chance of success,” Network Solutions chief executive officer Roy Dunbar said in a statement. “We are committed to helping small businesses and entrepreneurs thrive by helping them establish and grow their businesses through online services that are supported by quality customer service.”
The students had seventeen weeks to complete their web sites for the chance to win the $500 cash and a one year web site package from Network Solutions, with entries judged by Network Solutions web designers and NFTE members.
NFTE and Network Solutions, however, were not the first organizations to recognize her talents. Having learned glass-blowing, jewelry-making and mosaic art while involved with the Boys and Girls Club of Newark, Morgan became an intern at GlassRoots, a downtown Newark glass studio. According to a local news report, Morgan won a $3,500 scholarship from the Vermont-based World Learning organization’s Experiment in International Living program, which allowed her to travel to Mexico to learn about Mayan culture.
