GlobalSign offers solutions for healthcare compliance, including HIPAA
(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) – Regulatory compliance does not necessarily reduce data center breaches in the healthcare industry, according to a new study by security certificate provider GlobalSign (www.globalsign.com).
Last week, colocation and data center services provider CoreLink named Nav Ranajee its director of healthcare markets to serve increasing demand for cloud applications from the healthcare sector.
According to the results of the survey, 56 percent of IT security teams are spending the majority of their time devoted to compliance and despite this, data breaches that cost organizations as much as $100,000 per incident are happening each day.
The survey interviewed 107 IT administrators from organizations of various sizes. Half of these administrators are working for organizations that have at least 5,000 employees.
According to the survey, 79 percent of respondents say the biggest challenge in implementing security and compliance measures is finding effective tools to address both.
“This survey validates that healthcare organizations are performing due diligence when it comes to complying with HIPAA, HITECH and other state and federal regulations. It also demonstrates that just checking the boxes on compliance audits will not ensure security or privacy when it comes to sensitive data,” Lila Kee, chief product officer, GlobalSign said in a statement. “Organizations need to thoroughly evaluate technologies before making a purchase and deploying. They need to make sure that the solutions they implement can respond to stringent requirements imposed by auditors while actually protecting data and patient privacy.”
Over half of respondents devote more time to HIPAA compliance procedures, while 47 percent of respondents have experienced a patient-records data breach in the past two years.
HIPAA protects the privacy of individually identifiable health information, setting national standards for the security of electronic protected health information, according to the government website.
A study released in April by Ipswitch found that nearly 40 percent of network administrators find HIPAA is the most challenging security regulation to implement.
In April, web hosting provider Intermedia launched compliance templates for HIPPA as part of its email encryption service.
