March 15, 2005 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — The Internet Storm Center (isc.sans.org) reported this week that a large-scale hack attack occurred over the weekend, infecting the servers of several Web hosting companies and turning the sites hosted on those boxes into distributors of malicious code.
The attack targeted shared hosting servers hosting multiple Web sites. According to ISC, the attack resulted in scripts being attached to the home pages of each of the sites hosted on the compromised servers. The scripts then redirected visitors to a malicious site, which distributed the code. By Monday afternoon, the malicious site was reportedly offline.
