(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Internet exchange provider TELEHOUSE America announced on Thursday its public peering interconnection point, New York International Internet Exchange, has exceeded the 200Gbps max traffic volume threshold.
The move comes a month after managed hosting provider Voxel signed a deal to interconnect at TELEHOUSE New York Chelsea.
This is the second time in less than a year that the company has doubled its traffic volume, following April`s milestone when it reached the 100 gigabit mark.
NYIIX is currently the biggest public Internet exchange in the New York Metro Market, and is one of the 10 of largest peering points in the world.
Owned and operated by TELEHOUSE America, the neutral exchange point consists of 146 active peering members from all over the world.
As TELEHOUSE points out in the press release, this increase in traffic demonstrates its ability to attract both large ISP’s to the exchange and showcases the benefits of peering to smaller companies looking to reduce costs.
NYIIX is designed to provide the Internet community a neutral, scalable peering infrastructure and to assure reliable and robust Internet connectivity.
With plans to invest in redundant infrastructure and expand access in other local carrier hotels, NYIIX provides 1G and 10G connections in 111 8th Avenue, TELEHOUSE New York Broadway, TELEHOUSE New York Teleport on Staten Island, TELEHOUSE New York Chelsea located on 85 10th Avenue, and 60 Hudson St.
NYIIX offers public peering as well as private peering over VLAN, enabling independent networks to exchange Internet traffic to complement and supplement public or paid bandwidth networks.
By peering with TELEHOUSE, customers interconnect over a layer-2 switch to many ISPs, content and application providers, at different locations, providing a more cost effective and improved network performance solution.
“NYIIX is one of the most exciting services offered by TELEHOUSE. We are delighted to announce such a huge success,” said Akio Sugeno, VP of Internet engineering, operations, and business development at TELEHOUSE. “Achieving 200 gigabits per second is no small accomplishment, and it further proves that NYIIX is one of the most significant IXP’s in the United States. As we move into 2012, we will continue to expand NYIIX’s presence in the New York Metro Market and make further investment in the infrastructure to support the needs of our members.”
The NYIIX platform is regularly updated in order to accommodate new trends and technology requirements. TELEHOUSE said it would announced these new updates in the first quarter of 2012.
