Government Recommends Web Security Practices

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Government officials are calling for a new Internet paradigm that incorporates a risk-management approach and innovative technologies to keep the web secure in future generations.

Deputy assistant secretary of defense for cyber identity and information assurance, Robert Lentz, said now is the time to secure and preserve the web during a Black Hat 2009 keynote Thursday, according to ChannelWeb. “This really has to be our number-one priority. Everything we do is all about preserving the Internet,” he said to a Black Hat audience. “If there’s anything we need to do, it’s to all team up together and make this a global issue as we deal with this fragile ecosystem.”

Lentz said that the Internet’s network-centric model is changing to a cloud and web 2.0-based one, pushing it in the direction of a content-centric model, posing a daunting challenge to security professionals. He said government and industry to have to strengthen network underpinnings, focusing on DNS weaknesses and vulnerabilities. He also recommends there be more resources directed at education, and for clouds to incorporate multi-factor authentication and secure content automation protocols.

Lentz’s speech at Black Hat is a preview of what will be discussed at the Cyber Security Conference in Washington, DC, September 23-24, 2009. Hosted by the Association of Naval Aviation, in association with Technology Training Corporation, the conference will address the latest cyber security threats, initiatives and opportunities, bringing together senior experts from the Department of Defense, Commerce, Treasury, State, Justice, the legal community, and aerospace and defense industries.

Lentz and others will discuss the special challenges associated with the control of communications, computers, nuclear, space and other sensitive technologies. Speakers will also address best practices in licensing and compliance and provide blueprints for setting up global export control and compliance programs.
