May 3, 2007 — (WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Search engine giant Google (google.com) announced on Thursday it has plans to build a $600 million data center in Pryor, Oklahoma.
According to reports, Google will begin site preparation and construction in the next few weeks at the MidAmerica Industrial Park and plans to begin operation in the first facility within the next 18 months.
The search engine giant says another data center building is planned for the site, with construction following the completion of the first building. Expansion needs beyond these two buildings depend on future business needs and will be evaluated at a later date, says Google.
Once fully operational, Google expects the data center complex to be staffed by up to 200 workers. Full-time Google employees will earn an average salary of about $48,000 per year and positions include facilities support, systems administration and data center technicians.
Google also recently acquired US-based Internet marketing group DoubleClick in an all-cash transaction for $3.1 billion – its largest acquisition to date.
