(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Search engine giant Google announced on Tuesday it opened its new $600 million date center in Council Bluffs, Iowa bringing jobs and opportunities, according to a report by the Associated Press.
First announced in June 2007, the 60-acre site in the Council Bluffs Industrial Foundation’s new business park is located across the Missouri River from Omaha, Nebraska.
At the time of the announcement, Google said the new data center would create 200 new jobs.
Governor Chet Culver and other officials joined Hanafan at Tuesday’s grand opening ceremony.
Hanafan says he is optimistic that the company will expand beyond the facility’s 60 acres.
The company owns over 1,100 acres nearby the site.
Google says the data center will create about 200 news jobs to the area, with a range of positions including computer technicians and product managers.
Chris Russell, operations manager at Google’s Council Bluffs data center, declined to offer details about which Google services the facility will offer, but he did say they could vary from its search engine services to Gmail services.
Last month, Google was granted a US patent for its floating data center that is powered by the ocean to generate power and cooling.
