(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — According to several reports, including this one published by Rich Miller at Data Center Knowledge on Tuesday, Bill Weihl, the former “green energy czar” at Google will join Facebook in a similar role, starting next month.
According to a post on Fresh Dialogues, Weihl left Google back in November, citing the desire to “move on and find something new.” While at Google, Weihl led the company’s $800 million investment in green technology (made between 2006 and now).
Not much specific info on what the role at Facebook will be, but in another conversation with Fresh Dialogues, Weihl said “the focus will be on sustainability, clean energy, energy efficiency, etc.”
For Facebook, of course, the news of the appointment comes very shortly after the company settled its differences with Greenpeace around clean energy, agreeing to work together to promote clean energy sources, and provide Facebook users with tools for managing their own energy consumption.
Facebook will also work to power its facilities using renewable energy sources.
The partnership ends Greenpeace’s “unfriend coal” campaign, which had targeted Facebook as a huge consumer of coal-powered energy.
