Google Chrome OS Download Confirmed as Fake

A screen shot published by Gizmodo of the alleged Google Chrome OS download, now confirmed as a fake.

(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) — Following Google’s announcement that it is working on developing a new operating system based around the Chrome web browser, rumors began spreading across the Internet this week that a leaked version of the OS is now available for download, according to a report by PC World.

This so-called leaked version has now been confirmed as a fake that is completely unrelated to Google.

Credible sources such as Gizmodo gave further validity to the fake operating system, publishing a story that contained screen shots of the alleged leaked Chrome operating system.

The website has since updated the story to verify the leaked software as a fake.

Other community forums and social networks like Twitter have helped contribute to spreading the false rumor, as seemingly credible sources discussed the availability of the Chrome OS beta.

The fake OS appeared to be legitimate as it is hosted on the google.com domain, lists a range features including a GNOME desktop, Google Picassa integration and a Flash Player plugin, and displayed some Google logos on the page.

The site was created using Google Sites, directed to sites.google.com and contains publicly available information about the Chrome OS that was included in Google’s previous announcements. The site owner’s then posted a link to download an unrelated tool.

However, the website owner posted a disclaimer at the bottom of the page that specified, “Chrome OS is not related to Google. Service is provided by SUSE Studio. Seethe license.” Google has since taken down the site for violating its terms of service.

Although Google has disabled the fake software download, there is a great possiblity that many other similar sites will soon pop up and potentially contain malicious links.

Last September, Google released its open-source Internet browser Chrome, which it said at the time was a “more sophisticated” alternative to other web browsers available on the market.
