(WEB HOST INDUSTRY REVIEW) –- Google announced via its blog it has signed a power purchase agreement for wind energy in Oklahoma, marking its second renewable energy purchase in less than a year.
In a recently released Greenpeace report, the environmental organization highlighted IBM and Google efforts in demonstrating the best overall approach to reducing their current footprints.
In the blog post, Gary Demasi of Google’s global infrastructure team wrote that the purchase is similar in size and structure to the agreement Google signed last July for wind energy in Iowa.
Both wind energy purchases were done through Google Energy, an entity the company set up last year for the purpose of participating in the wholesale energy market.
But unlike its previous wind energy purchase, which was not used to power its data centers, Google says it will be applying this new wind power to its Mayes County, Oklahoma data center. The new 100.8MW data center will be built and open for operation later this year.
The company will purchase energy from NextEra Energy Resources’ Minco II wind facility in Oklahoma for the next 20 years.
Demasi says the purchase is part of Google’s overall efforts to reduce its impact on the environment.
So far, the company has managed to reduce its energy consumption by over 50 percent by building “highly energy-efficient facilities.”
The company has made an additional $350 million investment in renewable energy projects. In addition to this latest PPA, Google also purchases high-quality carbon offsets for any remaining emissions.
GOogle recently published a white paper on green PPAs that can be viewed here, as well as posted a YouTube video that gives more details about the Oklahoma PPA.
