February 24, 2009 — Google’s (www.google.com) popular, free email platform, Gmail, which went offline Tuesday, affecting users worldwide, is now over after lasting roughly two and a half hours starting at 9:30am GMT, disrupting many individuals in the European time zones during business hours, as well as night owls in the Americas.
According to an official Google blog post by Gmail site reliability manager Acacio Cruz, users should find that they’re able to access their email now without any further problems.
British hosting provider 34SP.com noted that only the email service was affected; neither Google Apps nor Google Analytics seemed to be offline. Because many of its customers use Gmail to communicate to them, 34SP.com encouraged users to use their chat function in place of email.
While Google could give no reason for the outage, the company apologized and said its engineers are currently searching for the source of the problem.
HostMySite.com marketing vice president posted a blog on the WHIR about the outage.
